In der unmittelbaren Umgebung des Canals haben sich viele junge Firmen niedergelassen, IT-Branche, Architekten und Agenturen- eben viele Kreative. So sind die Bars, Bistros und Restaurants wiederbelebt worden oder auch neu entstanden . Das Leben am Canal ist wieder „Branche“, also angesagt und so folgen viele dem Trend und manche schaffen einen neuen.
Und natürlich muß man „Antoine et Lili“ erwähnen. Wie beschreibt man diese Instituition, diesen Wahnsinn am Canal: Klamotten, Kitsch und Kinderkrams trifft es wohl am besten. In der einen von drei Boutiquen gibt es Klamotten- man findet einen Sarong aus Seide, aber auch einen Hamman- Dress, oder wie wäre es mit einem Parfum Robe Bustier. Das Ganze zu bezahlbaren Preisen und ausschließlich für Damen. In der zweiten Boutique dann Accessoires und Interieurs- also z.B. Nylon-Einkaufstaschen aus Mexico oder Kerzen aus Nepal. Die dritte Boutique könnte heißen: “ Alles für das Kind“, Kinderwagen, Kleidung, etc..
Man kann am Ufer des Canals Filmaufnahmen beobachten, es gibt ein Lycèe, also ein Gymnasium für Mädchen und in der Mittagspause kommen die Angestellten der umliegenden Agenturen zum Canal für einen Snack oder nur, um sich etwas zu erholen.
Sonntags sind die Strassen beiderseits des Canals für den Autoverkehr gesperrt, es gibt einen Flohmarkt und viele Menschen nutzen die Ruhe für einen Spaziergang am Canal. Eine dörfliche Idylle mitten in Paris.
Dann gibt es das „Artazart“, eine selbsternannte Buchhandlung für modernes Design ganz in Orange mit Buchdeckeln aus Federn, Aluminium oder noch ausgefalleneren Materialien und das „Chez Prune“ ein Cafe, aber auch Bistro, gut sowohl für ein Früstück als auch ein kleines Menue am Abend, natürlich geblieben und dennoch angesagt.
Vergessen darf man nicht das ehemals berühmte “ Hotel du Nord“ aus dem gleichnamigen Film von 1938, in dem Marcel Carné Regie führte. Dieses Hotel am Canal Saint Martin wird von einem Ehepaar gekauft und bald kreuzen sich die Lebenswege vieler Personen aus dem Nordosten von Paris dort und so entwickeln sich viele kleine und große Dramen. Heute ist davon nur noch ein Cafe übriggeblieben. Und ebenfalls nicht vergessen sollte man Audrey Tautou in dem Film “ Die fabelhafte Welt der Amelie“, der auch zum Teil am Canal spielt. Unvergessen, wie sie vom Schleusentor Steinchen über das Wasser springen läßt. Ein Film, den man nur empfehlen kann.
Es soll hier nicht verschwiegen werden, dass es natürlich an den Ufern des Canal Saint Martin auch Bereiche gibt, die einen verfallenen Eindruck hinterlassen. Aber man hat insgesamt den Eindruck, dass sich etwas Positives entwickelt, das Leben sich hier wieder verjüngt und der Canal wieder zum Mittelpunkt des sozialen Lebens geworden ist.
Und wenn man an seinen Gestaden in einem schönen Bistro mit Blick auf das Wasser seine Gedanken schweifen läßt, ist es kaum fassbar, dass man mitten in Paris ist nicht unweit des Gare du Nord mit seinem hektischen Treiben.
