Leider habe ich es in den letzten Tagen in Paris nicht geschafft, hier zu schreiben- ich bitte um Pardon und versuche , das Versäumte jetzt nachzuholen. Die Eckdaten des Canal Saint Martin hatte ich bereits erwähnt und in der Tat wird er auch von der Schiffahrt genutzt, seien es die Ausflugsboote mit den Touristen, die Sportschiffahrt oder sogar die Frachtschiffe.
Die Schiffe fahren im Bereich des Place de la Bastille bis zum Beginn des Quai de Valmy in der Nähe des Place de la Republique und das kurze Stück unter dem Place de la bataille de Stalingrad unterirdisch . Zu jeder Schleuse gehört noch ein Schleusenwärter und das entsprechende Haus.
Zum Teil sind es Doppelschleusen. Insgesamt werden 29 Höhenmeter überwunden und die Schleusengänge gestalten sich relativ langatmig, so dass die Schiffe nicht schneller vorankommen als ein schneller Fußgänger am Ufer des Kanals.
Die Brücken sind alle sehr schön gestaltet, jede anders und die Drehbrücken-Schleusen-Kombination ist immer wieder ein Anziehungspunkt.
Fast wichtiger als die Brücken an sich erscheinen mir die immer wieder unterschiedlichen Aussichten von den Brücken auf die Umgebung des Kanals, die oft von Ufer zu Ufer unterschiedlich ist- man wechselt zwischen kleinen Welten.
Überdacht ist der Kanal langstreckig von Laubbäumen und das macht ihn zu einer grünen Oase im sonst oft sehr stressigen Paris. Zum Leben am Kanal später mehr.
