Basel hat gerade einmal 170.00 Einwohner, thront mit seinem Stadtzentrum über dem Rhein und hinterlässt mit seinen Fachwerkhäusern, dem Münster und den langsam daherzuckelnden Trams ohne Flaniermeilen wie Champs-Élysée, Fifth Avenue oder Jungfernstieg einen eher gemütlichen Eindruck.
Auf der anderen Seite hat Basel über 30 Museen und hier hängen in Privathäusern Kunstwerke von Bosch über Margritte bis Koons. Und spätestens zur Art Basel, wenn tausende Besucher aus aller Welt die Stadt stürmen-im Jahre 2010 immerhin 62.000 in 4 Tagen, wird diese Stadt zur gar nicht mehr so heimlichen Kunsthauptstadt Europas.
Aber ich hatte an diesem Morgen noch ein anderes Ziel: Michelle wollte ein paar Photos von sich und ich wollte die neue mobile Blitzanlage draussen ausprobieren. Also fuhr ich mit der Tram vom „Barfi“ über die Mittlere Brücke auf die andere Seite des Rheins nach“Klein-Basel“. Hier ging ich die den oberen Rheinweg entlang und suchte nach einer Location. Doch, hier ließ sich gegen den Sonnenuntergang mit dem Rhein und der Altstadt von Groß-Basel im Hintergrund sicherlich photographisch einiges zustande bringen.
Dabei faszinierten mich erneut die Rheinfähren, von denen es vier Stück gibt. Hier in Höhe der Mittleren Brücke fährt die Münster-Fähre, „Leu“ genant. Alle Fähren sind sogenannte Rollfähren, d.h. sie nutzen die Kraft des Stroms, um auf die andere Seite des Flusses zu kommen. An jeder Fähre ist ein Schwenkhebel befestigt, der über ein langes Drahtseil, das Gierseil, an einer Reiterrolle hängt, die sich wiederum auf einer quer über den Rhein gespannten Stahltrosse frei bewegen kann. Nach dem Abstoßen vom Landungssteg bringt der „Fährimaa“ den Schwenkhebel auf die dem Ufer zugewandte Seite und die Fähre mit Hilfe des Ruders in einem Winkel von 45 ° in die Strömung des Rheins. Die Strömung drückt das Holzboot zur Seite und schiebt es so ohne jede Motorkraft über den Rhein.
Und auch flache Kähne finden sich , festgemacht an Bojen, deren Bedeutung sich mir nicht erschlossen hat.
Aber nun wollte ich mir die Altstadt von Basel anschauen.
