Basel-Juni 2011
Basel’s Altstadt gilt als eine der schönsten und besterhaltenen Europas. Man muß sie eigentlich in die rechtsrheinische Altstadt von Klein-Basel und die linksrheinische von Groß-Basel aufteilen. Ich habe mir die Letztere etwas genauer angesehen, wobei nicht unerwähnt bleiben soll, dass auch Klein-Basel z.B. mit interessanten Bars und Kneipen-der „Kaserne“, dem „Hirscheneck“, Dem “ Unternehmen Mitte“ oder dem „Bird’s Eye Jazz Club“- einiges zu bieten hat, wie auch mit dem rechtsrheinisch gelegenem Hotel Merian mit dem bekannten „Cafe Spitz“.
Aber ich ging jetzt über die Brücke auf die linke Seite des Rheins.
Es fanden sich beschauliche Gässchen und viele schöne, oft kleine Geschäfte. Außerdem finden sich wenig Parkplätze-Basel ist halt die Stadt der Trams, der Rheinfähren und der Busse. Am Barfüßer-, Markt- oder Aschenplatz taucht jede Minute eine neue Tram auf. Die Geschäfte liegen oft an steil ansteigenden Gassen.
Man könnte natürlich eine gezielte Altstadtbegehung vornehmen entlang der Routen, die nach berühmten Bewohnern dieser Stadt benannt sind- wie z.B. wie dem Dramatiker Rolf Hochhuth, dem Maler Hans Holbein der Ältere oder dem Künstler Arnold Böcklin. Hier wirkte Erasmus von Rotterdam und Friedrich Nietzsche lehrte 10 Jahre klassische Philologie. Aber ich wandele generell nicht so gern auf von Anderen vorgegebenen Pfaden und ließ mich durch die Altstadt treiben.
Diese Seite der Altstadt liegt auf zwei Hügeln, dem Spalenberg und dem Münsterhügel, so dass sogar Kirchen an relativ steilen Strassen gebaut wurden. Viele Geschäfte verkaufen Lebensmittelspezialitäten und sind in Basel wohl bekannt.
Aber auch Kurioses läßt sich finden, wie dieses “ Weihnachtsbaumausstattungsspecialgeschäft“, das unverdrossen auch im Juni geöffnet hat.
Auch nicht unerwähnt bleiben darf das Café “ Mercedes“, das der Generalimporteur für diese Automarke seiner Gattin geschenkt hat. Es hat einen wirklich bezaubernden Innenhof und in einem Raum eine ständige Wechselausstellung mit den modernsten Modellen und Oldtimern von Mercedes. Die gusseisernen Teekannen sind in schwarz für schwarzen Tee, in grün für grünen Tee und in rot für Früchtetee gehalten. Die servierten Teesorten sind hervorragend und dazu gibt es ausgesuchte sowohl süße als auch salzige kleine, sehr leckere Speisen.
Es gibt in dieser Altstadt sowohl Durchblicke, die eher an einen Blick auf das Mittelmeer vermuten lassen….
…..und welche, die eher einen verbauten Eindruck hinterlassen.
Und dann gibt natürlich noch das Rathaus-„Roothuus“ genannt, das auf dem Baseler Marktplatz durch seinen roten Sandstein auffällt. Der Bau entstammt im Wesentlichem aus dem Jahre 1503, als der große Rat beschloß, ein Neubau mit einer Verbindung zum damaligen Palast der Herren zu errichten. Bis 1611 gab es immer wieder Anbauten und Verzierungen an der Außenfassade sowie Bemalungen der Säle.
Aber erst 1898 -1904 kamen rechts der Turm und links der Trakt mit dem Erker dazu.
Insgesamt ein sehr sehenswertes Gebäude. Und überall begegnet einem der Basilisk, der Schildhalter für das Stadtwappen.
Basel schafft mit dem ihm eigenen unaufgeregtem Selbstverständnis den Spagat zwischen Mittelalter, Kulturmetropole und Standort von multinationalen, weltweit operierenden Chemie -und Pharma-unternehmen wie Novartis oder Roche. Den ersten Part hatte ich gerade gesehen, den letzten kannte ich durch Kristina und auf den mittleren freute ich mich beim anstehenden Besuch der ART BASEL.
Wie immer in üppiglicher Ausstattung mit Wort und Bild, kurzweilig anzusehen, sehr informativ und nicht abgedroschen. Selbst Basel kann so nach wie vor zum Erlebnis werden. Bin auf den Artikel des anstehenden Besuchs der ART BASEL schon recht gespannt……. Mit der Ermunterung weiterer Ergüsse………… Danke!
